2025 Cryonics Institute
Board of Directors Elections

[Disclaimer: this is a copy of the email I received from the Cryonics Institute on August 21, 2025. I copied it to this web page so it can be shared in response to requests from CI Members who wanted to see information about the election and the candidates. Steve LeBel]

VOTE NOW!

It’s election time! That means it’s time for voting members to cast their votes for the Board of Directors. Each voting member has four votes to allocate any way they see fit. As a reminder, voting members are those who have executed a suspension agreement with funding in place and are either lifetime members or have maintained annual membership for at least three years.

We encourage you to read each biography thoughtfully. Serving on the Board requires not only dedication and enthusiasm, but also the judgment, experience, and strong professional skills necessary to help guide and shape the organization effectively. Please carefully consider which candidates you feel are best prepared to represent our membership and advance the Cryonics Institute’s mission before casting your votes.

Voting members have until the day of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 7th, 2025 to submit their final votes. Ballots can be returned by mail using the envelope included in the mailing, faxed to 586-792-7062, or by email to info@cryonics.org.

Election results will be announced during the meeting. We warmly encourage all members to attend. The AGM is a great opportunity to connect with fellow members, hear updates on organizational initiatives, and engage directly with leadership. Please RSVP by emailing info@cryonics.org or calling 586-791-5961 to help us plan accordingly.

If you can’t make the meeting in person, please register to join us on Zoom.

We hope to see you there!

2025 Board of Directors Candidates

KEVIN DOYLE (incumbent)
Kevin is running for re-election as CI Director. He hopes to continue contributing to the challenging work CI has ahead re growth, stability, standby education and changing public perceptions. The last eight years have seen significant advances in membership numbers, facility improvement, the outfitting of the new building, increased staffing and expansion in public reach. Being from Canada Kevin can present a bit of an international perspective.

He holds a Ph.D. in Operations Research from the University of Toronto. Has worked in the Nuclear Power Generation for many years and also has experience with optimization projects in the healthcare field, the equipment maintenance field and the area of organizational behaviour. He presently operates his own consulting organization.

Additionally, he was born on a farm and has operated a large-scale beef farm for several decades, providing hands-on experience in the areas of ground-level work and organization.

PAUL HAGEN (candidate)
Paul Hagen lives in Waupaca, Wisconsin and is retired from a Senior Financial Specialist position with the State of Wisconsin. In 2016 he launched a successful residential and vacation rental business which has grown to over fifty units throughout Central and Northwest Wisconsin.

He is happily married with two wonderful children.  Paul is in his sixteenth term serving on his city council.  He has also volunteered in his community in numerous civic and charitable organizations.

Paul has a strong connection to CI as his Dad, Jerry Hagen, is Patient #81. He holds an Associate in Computer Science and a BA in Finance.  He has decades of varied and thorough financial experience.  He is a past CI Board member who currently serves on the CI Finance Committee.  “My only agenda is to foster the long-term safety and prosperity of CI.  I believe in respectful discourse and common-sense solutions.”

DON KLEINSEK, Ph.D (incumbent)
Dr. Kleinsek has a long history and vested interest with the Cryonics Institute as a featured speaker, annual AGM attendee and personal relative’s, pet’s and friend’s suspension at CI. He brings a wealth of experience in both business operations at the CEO level and scientific research & development in lifespan and healthspan disciplines directly related to and adjacent to cryonics.  Somewhat similar to whole body cryopreservation, Kleinsek has “hands-on” experience in cryonics at the cellular level, routinely using freeze-thaw methods with various chemical solutions on cells as a long-term means of storing cells for future functionality, varying the concentration of different cryo-protectants, varying temperature lowering to various colder setpoints, varying the time for freezing at a setpoint temperature, thawing at different temperatures, and changing cell concentration for adequate freezing and thawing methods.  Kleinsek’s initial board ambitions will include Standby scenarios for suspension; Succession for future administration placement; Science of cryostasis.

NICOLAS LACOMBE (candidate)
“I care a lot about the long term future, notably about existential risks. I have helped fix bugs and test the CI check-in app. I have worked in the software development industry for 10 years in various roles such as developer, team lead, and software architect. I would like to offer my expertise and skills to help CI improve computer security and user experience. I would also like to help CI in any other way I can, which might include things like improving its processes, assessing the quality of CI’s protocols (ex.: using electron microscopy), helping with membership growth, improving standby/stabilisation/transport services, and improving CI’s long term sustainability.”

STEVE LEBEL (candidate)
Steve LeBel brings decades of nonprofit leadership, business acumen, unique problem-solving skills, and a deep personal investment in cryonics. He spent 17 years as the president of a Michigan hospital with 20 locations in three states, where he developed extensive expertise in governance, strategic planning, and fiduciary responsibility.

Since retiring from healthcare, Steve founded several technology companies offering computer networking, web design, hosting, and data centers. After selling those businesses, he focused on long-term investment strategies and later wrote a series of award-winning humorous fantasy novels. In recent years, his passion has turned to cryonics.

Steve is a forward-thinking team player who has already begun working with CI leadership on projects to strengthen the organization’s future. He has been reviewing nonprofit corporate structures where CI could accept tax-deductible donations and better safeguard its assets. He is also developing a model revival trust designed to give every member the option of contributing modest amounts that may grow into meaningful resources at the time of revival.

In a recent interview with Max More, Steve discussed his priorities for improving cryonics: reducing the time from legal death to cryopreservation, deploying early vital sign alert systems, working with hospices and funeral directors, establishing stronger quality control measures, online signups, and applying best practices in nonprofit board governance.

His published article in CI Magazine — “How Hospice Can Improve Your Cryopreservation Outcome” — reflects his practical and compassionate approach to member outcomes. Additional articles and downloadable cryonics-adapted documents are available on his website.

Steve values dialogue with members. He’s hosting a Zoom Session on August 28th for members who expressed interest in Cryonics Revival Trusts. He’ll present the current model so members can provide input into the process. To receive an invitation, email him at Steve@SteveLeBel.com.

With strong ties to CI and its leaders, Steve is committed to transparent governance, prudent financial strategies, and building CI’s institutional strength — all critical for our long-term success.

NICHOLAS R VANDERMUELEN (incumbent)
“I’ve been a member of the Cryonics Institute and Suspended Animation since 2014. I’ve been a CI director since 2019. I live near CI, and I regularly attend the Annual General Meetings. I’ve also been a director of Biomedical Research Longevity Society since 2018. I’m well versed in the sciences, technologies, and processes of cryopreservation and I’m extremely passionate about cryonics. If re-elected, I’ll continue to make vital decisions that ensure the patients at CI are continuously maintained within cryostasis. I’ll ensure the patients at CI are all successfully revived to the fullest extent possible in the future. Thank you.”
